From legendary concerts to unforgettable sporting events, the Oman Arena has been a cornerstone of entertainment in our Jackson for decades.

🏛️ The Oman Arena’s Past 🏛️

The Oman Arena (The Jackson Coliseum), a historic gem in Jackson, Tennessee, has been a central hub for countless events since its opening in 1967. Over the years, it has hosted a wide variety of activities, from major concerts and sporting events to community gatherings and political rallies.

One of the most popular continuous events held at the Oman Arena was the NAIA basketball championships, which attracted athletes and fans from all over the country. It hosted Legendary musicians like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Toby Mac & Kenny Chesney, comedians like Larry The Cable Guy and athletes such as John Cena and The Harlem Globetrotters, who all left their mark on the arena’s storied history. 🎙️

As one of the largest venues in West Tennessee, Oman Arena has always been a focal point for local and national events, making it an important part of Jackson’s cultural and entertainment legacy.

🏟️ The Oman Arena’s Present 🏟️

In February of 2022, The Oman Arena was purchased for $1 by the Jackson Madison County School System. Since the JMCSS has a different vision for the Oman Arena, its activity has slowed down, with fewer large-scale events compared to its peak.

The last major event held at the arena was a local wrestling tournament, showcasing the facility’s ability to host smaller community and sports-related activities. Currently, the arena is being used for occasional local events like graduation ceremonies, sports competitions, and some public events. 🏀

While it does remain underutilized, many residents and community leaders recognize the need for rejuvenation which ties in with the plans of the JMCSS. The goal is to transform the Oman Arena into the Hub City Center, which will be one part of Hub City Central.

The Hub City Center will be the updated state of the art version of the Oman Arena, Hub City Central will be the entire future campus area.

🌟 And The Oman Arena’s Future 🌟

Looking ahead, there are ambitious plans to breathe new life into the area. Renovations could come with a price tag ranging between $40 and $50 million, depending on the scope of the project. As of now the project includes a stadium, arena, track & field, updated home & away locker rooms, a refreshed concessions area, modern press box, new parking lot and new jumbotron scoreboard!

The current Central Office will also be moving into the old building of Madison Academic High School. These updates are set to not only modernize the venue with state-of-the-art seating, enhanced lighting and sound systems, and improved accessibility for all guests but it will help revitalize the area. The proposed changes aim to make the arena a prime destination for concerts, conferences, and large-scale sports events.

In addition to upgrading the arena’s interior, plans also include creating multi-use spaces that can host trade shows, conventions, and regional competitions, boosting economic activity in Jackson.

The goal of these renovations would be to transform Oman Arena into a versatile venue, capable of attracting major events to West Tennessee while still serving the community for local activities.

The city is exploring different funding options, including:

  • State and Federal Grants

  • Private Partnerships

    AND

  • Local Investments

to cover the renovation costs. Once completed, Oman Arena is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the region by attracting more visitors, events, and generating significant tax revenue .

This revitalized space would not only become a premier event venue in the area but also be part of a larger vision to turn the surrounding area into a bustling entertainment district for Jackson.
