Something shocking happened during the holiday season this year. The Old Hickory Mall was one of the most discussed topics around town, so let’s talk about it!

🌟 The Most Popular Attraction In Town 🌟

The Old Hickory Mall in Jackson, TN, was once the beating heart of retail in West Tennessee. When it opened in 1967, it wasn't just a shopping center; it was the place to be.

Families from Jackson and surrounding towns like Humboldt, Milan, and Brownsville would flock to the mall to shop, dine, and connect. Back then, it was an open-air shopping center, a cutting-edge concept for its time, with iconic stores like J.C. Penney, Kisber's Department Store, and Sears were some of the most popular brands in its lineup.

In 1978, the mall underwent a massive transformation, transitioning from an open-air concept to an enclosed mall. This change marked a new chapter in its history, making it more appealing during the hot Tennessee summers and rainy cold winters.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and even early 2000’s, Old Hickory Mall flourished. The addition of stores like Abercrombie & Fitch, Goldsmith's (which later became Macy's), and Belk solidified its status as the premier shopping destination in the region. It wasn’t uncommon for families to spend entire Saturdays at the mall, enjoying the bustling food court, seasonal events, and the latest fashion trends.

But the mall wasn’t just popular in Jackson; it was a regional hotspot. People from across West Tennessee made day trips to shop there, making it a symbol of Jackson’s prosperity.

For decades, the Old Hickory Mall was not only a retail hub but also a cultural touchstone, hosting everything from fashion shows to Santa visits. It’s no wonder many residents still have fond memories of its glory days.

🛑 The State Of The Old Hickory Mall Today 🛑

Fast forward to today, and the Old Hickory Mall is a shadow of its former self. Only two anchor stores, J.C. Penney and Belk, remain—a stark contrast to its heyday when the mall was packed with major retailers. The closure of Sears in 2019 and Macy’s in 2021 were significant blows, leaving large, empty spaces that stand as reminders of what was lost. For many residents, walking through the mall today feels bittersweet, as they remember its former life.

However, this past holiday season brought a glimmer of hope. Against all odds, the mall was busier than it’s been in years. Shoppers filled the corridors, and the atmosphere felt festive and welcoming. Credit is due to all the local residents and visitors who ventured into the mall once again!

Over the last several years many local entrepreneurs have taken the risk and opened businesses in the mall. Businesses like Daily Thread, The Popup Shop, and House of Philly's all made an attempt to inject new life into the space. Although they were not successful, the tides may be shifting once more from people's need for communal spaces.

Some challenges still remain. Many residents cite crime and security concerns as reasons they no longer frequent the mall. While the management has made strides in improving cleanliness and creating a more inviting environment, these issues continue to overshadow its progress.

CBL the mall's owner has 91 properties, which includes malls, outlet centers, and lifestyle centers and while other locations seem to be getting renovations and investment, our mall seems to be forgotten. The mall’s survival hinges on its ability to address these concerns and win back the trust of the community.

đź”® The Future Of The Old Hickory Mall! đź”®

As the Old Hickory Mall approaches its 60th anniversary in 2027, many are skeptical about its chances of survival. Poorly managed malls across the country are struggling, but well-managed ones are thriving, proving that the right approach can make all the difference.

This past holiday season reinforced the community’s attachment to the Old Hickory Mall, as Jackson—and West Tennessee—showed that there’s still a place in their hearts for a local shopping destination.

Interestingly, malls across the U.S. are experiencing an unexpected resurgence. Once written off as relics of the past, they are reinventing themselves as community hubs, blending retail with entertainment, dining, and even coworking spaces. This trend gives hope to those who want to see Old Hickory Mall thrive once again.

The City of Jackson has already floated plans for the site, envisioning a mixed-use development that could include housing, retail, and office space. However, these plans are long-term and could take a decade or more to materialize.

In the meantime, the mall’s future remains uncertain, but not without potential. With major investments pouring into Tennessee and Jackson becoming a hotspot for growth, 2025 could be the year the Old Hickory Mall begins its comeback.

For many, the mall represents more than just shopping; it’s a symbol of community and nostalgia. Residents are rooting for its revival, not just as a retail destination but as a gathering place for generations to come. Whether it reinvents itself or continues to adapt in small ways, the Old Hickory Mall’s story may be far from over.

Surprisingly Enough Millennials & Gen Z Are Helping To Bring Back Shopping Malls.

While the Old Hickory Mall may no longer be the crown jewel it once was, its resilience is undeniable. From its beginnings as a bustling open-air shopping center to its current struggles, the mall has weathered countless changes.

And yet, it refuses to give up. With the right vision, community support, and perhaps a little luck, this iconic Jackson landmark might just have a brighter future ahead. After all, if there’s one thing the Old Hickory Mall has proven, it’s that it knows how to endure.

We want your thoughts! The Old Hickory Mall is an important part of Jackson’s history, and we’d love to hear your ideas for its future!
