And here we go!

So a new wave of excitement has started to ripple through the hub city as we get closer and closer to the official opening of Michaels. Michaels is North America’s largest provider of arts, crafts, framing, floral wall decor and merchandise. 🧵 This will bring a treasure trove of creative opportunities and also promises a significant positive impact on the local economy. 🏘️

Jacksonians should see this as an indicator of the growth and prosperity that is being built up in the region. After the closure of Bed Bath & Beyond, many residents were left wondering what will fill the void. Luckily the wait is almost over!  This retail powerhouse got its start in 1973 in Irving, Texas and come this July it will officially be adding the hub city to its 1,252 store locations that span a whopping 49 states.

🌟What are the benefits?🌟

  • 🧑‍💼 Jobs: On average Michael’s employees between 30 and 70 employees at most locations.

  • 💲 Pay: The pay tends to average out between $13 and $18 per hour.

  • 💥 Impact: The overall impact of new stores in a city is mostly positive by providing jobs, stable employment and contributing to overall economic stability.

Michaels' diverse range of products appeals to a broad customer base, including arts and crafts supplies and home décor items. This not only attracts local residents but also draws in visitors from neighboring areas, boosting foot traffic and encouraging spending in other nearby businesses.

In order for a brand like Michaels to make a move into the hub city it truly signifies the confidence they have in the city!

It indicates the following:

  • Michael’s Sees Growth Potential! ✨

  • Consistent Consumer Demand! 🔼

  • It Shows Other Brands That Jackson is a vibrant and promising market worth investing in. 🏬

This combined with Michaels’ commitment to community engagement and involvement adds another layer of positivity to its impact.  Through sponsoring local events, partners with schools for art education programs, and supports charitable initiatives.

Now as we all know, nothing comes without some drawbacks!  So everyone get ready for more bad drivers in the columns area! 😂

🛑What are the drawbacks?🛑

  • Increased congestion in the Vann Drive/Columns area! 🚦

  • Employment practices that large retailers are known for such as low wages and lack of benefits. 🏥

  • And finally the biggest challenge will be against small and independent craft stores in the area. 🧶

While the economic benefits of Michaels' presence are significant, it's essential to acknowledge potential challenges or concerns that may arise.  This could be seen as the perfect opportunity for many small businesses to innovate, diversify their offerings, and provide unique experiences to customers.

Michaels' upcoming opening in Jackson represents a beacon of economic growth, job creation, and community enrichment. It symbolizes all the progress and hard work that will give way to many new opportunities, and help the flourishing retail landscape. As the hub city continues to draw in eager residents who anticipate browsing through aisles of creative inspiration, the city looks forward to the positive impact Michaels will bring to its vibrant tapestry of businesses and community life.

Opportunities For Small Businesses & Entrepreneurship 💵

We will end this on a positive note because there are more upsides than downsides when it comes to Michael’s setting up here. Especially for small business owners who make their own products.

  • Michael’s is primarily focused on crafting! This means that many more opportunities will be present for those looking to learn or make their own products.

  • It opens the door for crafting related events.

Think of events like: Local Comic-Cons, Kids-Con, Sci-Fi events, Renaissance Fairs or Festivals, Anime Expos, etc.

  • People Pay Big Money For These Custom Costumes! People pay between $200 and $1200 for these custom costumes for these events.

  • Talented Local Artists and Local Designers Benefit! This is often the perfect time for local crafters, designers, makeup artists etc to finally get to show off their talents!

Lastly most people don’t know this but one of the biggest reasons Michael’s is expanding is because they are currently competing with Etsy. In 2023 Michael’s launched their marketplace called “MakersPlace” which gives sellers in the handmade goods space another outlet to sell their products outside of Etsy. Now anyone in Jackson will have easier access to creating products and selling them locally as well as globally using “MakersPlace”!
