Jackson's Brain Drain Problem!

Jackson, Tennessee, like many small to mid-sized cities, is grappling with a “brain drain” a trend where young, educated, and skilled residents leave in search of better opportunities.

As cities like Nashville, Atlanta, and Miami continue to expand, Jackson faces a unique challenge: how to retain its young talent while maintaining the aspects of the city that make it appealing to long-time residents.

The following explores Jackson’s contrasting generational views and the potential for a “happy medium” that meets the needs of both groups.

🧓 Older Residents Don’t Want Anything to Change 🧓

For many older residents, Jackson’s charm lies in its familiarity and slower pace. These residents aren’t necessarily “stuck in their ways,” but they’ve found a comfort in the city’s predictability and affordability.

Jackson offers manageable traffic, lower living costs, and a relaxed environment—qualities that have helped retain older generations over the years.

For retirees and older adults who’ve lived here most of their lives, Jackson’s low density is a blessing. If you've lived here over the last 10 years, you may have noticed how certain areas have become even more congested! (Highland At 5 O’Clock) 😂

And, dare we bring up the dreaded roundabout downtown? (Psst, we’re getting a second roundabout!👈️) Many older residents enjoy the community’s tight-knit nature and want to avoid the pitfalls of larger cities, like Nashville and Atlanta, which are often bogged down by long commutes, expensive housing, and congestion.

Moreover, older residents often feel that rapid growth could mean more than just added traffic; it could lead to an increase in crime, gentrification, and potentially push longtime residents out as demand for housing drives up prices.

For this group, development can feel threatening to Jackson’s “small-town” way of life and may disrupt the community bonds that they value. However, it’s also important to note that older residents are concerned not only about themselves but also about the potential negative impacts that fast-tracked development could have on all Jackson residents.

🚀 Younger Residents Want Everything to Change 🚀

In contrast, younger generations in Jackson often see growth and modernization as critical to the city’s future. These residents want Jackson to feel less like a quiet, contained town and more like a thriving urban center where innovation, entertainment, and opportunity meet.

For many young professionals, students, and entrepreneurs, the Jackson they grew up in simply doesn’t have the job opportunities, lifestyle, or amenities they seek. Without such amenities, they feel their only options are to leave and find success in places like Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Chattanooga, Miami, Austin or Raleigh (NC).

Younger Jacksonians crave variety and excitement, from better nightlife options and diverse food options to more advanced job opportunities in fields like tech, entertainment, and media.

Many want a vibrant downtown scene, more green spaces, and infrastructure improvements that could support a modern workforce. They envision Jackson as a hub for young professionals where they can not only work in industries they’re passionate about but also engage in the kind of social and recreational activities that draw people into larger cities.

For these young adults, the decision to leave isn’t just about finding better-paying jobs; it’s about living in a city that meets their ambitions and lifestyle aspirations.

Without these changes, Jackson risks losing out on the talent and creativity of its younger generations, which are essential to the city’s long-term growth and sustainability. As they leave for larger cities, Jackson’s tax base, cultural diversity, and potential for economic innovation are at risk of dwindling.

⚖️ Our Happy Little Medium ⚖️

So, how can Jackson bridge the gap? The answer lies in finding a balanced approach that respects the needs and values of both generations while making Jackson a more attractive place to live for everyone.

Achieving this balance will involve targeted development that addresses key issues without compromising the city’s essential character.

Smart Development and Zoning: Jackson can explore zoning policies that encourage mixed-use developments in certain areas, like downtown, without disrupting residential neighborhoods. This would allow for a more vibrant commercial and entertainment district that appeals to younger residents, while still keeping quieter, suburban areas for families and older residents.

Job Creation and Industry Diversification: One of the most effective ways to retain young professionals is to create jobs in high-demand sectors. Partnering with educational institutions to foster local talent and attract tech companies could provide new employment opportunities that would encourage younger residents to stay. Additionally, promoting Jackson as a remote work-friendly city is another possibility to draw young professionals looking for an affordable alternative to bigger cities.

Public Infrastructure Investments: To appeal to both groups, Jackson should prioritize infrastructure that benefits all, such as improved roads, expanded public transportation, and more green spaces. We are seeing some of these plans rolling out already. Repairs are set for Cypress Grove, new walking trails have been created and many parks throughout the city have gotten updates!

Community Events and Cultural Expansion: Hosting events that celebrate Jackson’s history, diversity, and local talent can bring together residents of all ages. Jackson has seen an increase in the number of events happening year over year. These children’s events, arts festivals, farmers' market, Comic Con and other seasonal parades can keep the community connected and invested in the city’s growth, providing a cultural landscape that younger residents enjoy while fostering a sense of continuity for older residents.

Jackson does not need to be perfect, all it needs is a balanced approach that will position the city for growth while also valuing its traditions.

This should be the goal or that “Happy Medium” for not only helping retain the city’s younger population but also ensure that long-time residents feel valued and respected in the face of change.
